I’m just a random teenage girl LoTR fan whose hobby is reading the Simarillion. But I do think I have something to say: I voted “Other” on the poll because I greatly appreciate your Youtube Videos! They are amazing and I’m sad you don’t have more of them…It’s really helpful to imitate the correct pronunciations of Sindarin words and have someone explaining to you. Also I like rewatching the videos over and over again so I can “get the sounds in my head”. Plus, the one about Tengwar was WAY more helpful than reading text because it was easier to hear an explanation of “what the explanation of Tengwar meant”. I hope you can add more videos in the near future, or at least the future…I originally found out about this website through your videos . :D Anyway whether or not you can squeeze more videos in there I just want to let you know you’ve got a new fan! And I’ve recommended your site to a couple of LoTR nerds just to let you know how much you’ve won me over!
Thank you! Your kind words mean a lot to me. I will be making more videos… kinda strapped for time with a few other projects at the moment, but I want to have one for every lesson by the time May rolls around.
I just want to tell you that I am so SO happy that people like you exist and aren’t part of my “if the world was perfect yet nerdy” fantasy…because you are amazing! And also, that as long as this website is here I am fine with waiting ten years for you to finish any Youtube Videos…I could read it all day! Also in you said you received a letter from “another irate fan” who had “who had been studying from the great Elvish scholars”. But I think now that you are most definitely a great, great Elvish scholar! So thank you so much for having this site and I appreciate the Untrustworthy/Trustworthy site list put up because it is really useful (I had used a few untrustworthy sites before I found this one). I never really got the point of Grelvish because role-playing is role-playing and you want it to be as “real” as possible! You’re like the awesome Grelvish-fighting Elvish Police of the Web! :D
Meh, I don’t know if I’m one of the great elvish scholars – it’s more like I try to make the benefits of their work accessible to non-linguists.
Grelvish is perfectly legitimate as a conlang, seeing as it was made for a RP group that wasn’t set in Tolkien’s creation. I don’t really have a problem with it. I find it annoying when people try to use it in Tolkien-settings, but that’s about it. In its setting it is “real”.
Speaking of “real” elvish – that’s a really weird trend I’ve noticed. People using Tolkien’s languages for Elves of different fandoms. It always weirds me out a little because often the cultures aren’t compatible, and language and culture are so closely linked that it never seems to fit quite right.
At one point, I certainly thought of myself as a member of the “Grelvish-fighting Elvish Police of the Web” – but now… I see myself in less of a policing role and in more of a teaching role. I’m more concerned these days about making the Tolkien-language community bigger, and getting more ideas and theories to enrich the study of Tolkien’s languages.
Again, thank you for the high complements! I will try to live up to them. :D
I e-mailed the homework for chapter 1 lesson 1 to you, but you haven’t responded. Please try to respond as soon as you can. Thanks.
p.s. I think you’re doing an excellent job with this site:)
Er… the semester doesn’t start for a few more weeks. Sorry if I didn’t make that clear!
I’m still editing and writing new material for it at the moment!
Hi. I’m SO excited about this site. You are amazing! What is this I see about Sindarin Lessons? I couldn’t find a link to something like that, but I’m also not good with websites. How do I sign up for these lessons?
1. Go to the website: http://your-sindarin-textbook.realelvish.net
2. Along the bottom, you’ll see a link to the Roster. Click it.
3. Fill out the registration form and send it to me.
4. You’re done!
Is that any help?
Thank you!
